On the 19th March at the London’s Summit on the future of sex dollsVirtual Futures, there was a standoff between the sex-robot activists and the academics on whether the robotic sex dolls can unlock new sexual potentials or whether they are just like any other product meant to generate huge profits for the manufacturers and promoters.

The sex doll industry is one that has witnessed a tremendous degree of growth. The most recent development is the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the sex dolls which makes them capable of responding to human stimulation. Though we are not yet there, the future only promises of more intelligent and human-like robots that will greatly enhance the disabled’s sex life and act as ideal marriage alternatives. However, experts warn that the robotic sex dolls will heighten the level of the commodification of sex workers by the buyers.

Past researchers have brought forth no substantial information to cut the development of the robotic sex doll. In fact, originally the campaign against sex robots started with the main aim of ensuring the robots are banned by the authorities, but it later shifted to pleading with the developers to consider some of the impacts of the technology.

During the Virtual Features event in London, the Richardson’s campaign on sex dolls was the main topic of discussion. More Speakers argued that the campaign was an evidence of a consumerist society and that the campaign only presented a one-sided understanding of sex work. The arguments revolved around how buyers of sex commodified sex workers, warning that sex dolls would only escalate the level of the commodification of sex workers.
